Sarah Raphael

The young British artist Sarah Raphael, whose work hangs in the Metropolitan Museum in New York and London's National Portrait Gallery, died at age 40.

Raphael died on January 10, 2001 of complications from pneumonia.
The daughter of Oscar-winning screen writer Frederic Raphael, Sarah Raphael decided she wanted to become an artist at the age of 7.

She explored many styles. Initially best known for her portraits, she also painted landscapes,
allegorical scenes and bright mosaics of color.

"No matter how far she strayed into the abstract, humanity was always her subject, and all the grief that went with it," The Independent newspaper said in an obituary.

"Human grief gave the coherence to her exuberance, the chest-voice to her joy. For all her conspicuous blessings, it was part of her genius that tragedy was not strange to her."

In 1996, Raphael -- whose striking good looks made her a familiar face in British celebrity
magazines -- won the NatWest Prize for Art for a series of paintings depicting Australian scenes. Plagued by migraines since she was a teen-ager, Raphael was eventually forced to give up using oil paints and turpentine in favor of acrylics.
