The boy's father went after him; but the father's light too was extinguished in the pit. Try as might those above, none could budge the cords; it was as if the father had turned to stone. They put so many backs to it to lift him that the strands frayed and snapped. Another son in the family prepared to go below. The mother was frantic to recover husband and son, and frantic not to lose the one left her.
